Family Food Club Recipes
At our weekly Family Food Club we make recipes of all kinds from all over the world to help make mealtimes with under 5s happier and healthier. Check out the recipes that we have made so far and see if you can try some at home!
Butternut Squash Soup
We took this simple delicious recipe from the Together We Cook recipe book created to celebrate the diverse communities of Lambeth and Southwark. It contains favourite recipes donated by local families which have been adapted to be low or medium in sugar, fat and salt.
Courgette and Lemon Muffins
This recipe was created by Hayley and is a great way to sneak some extra vegetables into a families diet and to make sweet treats with less sugar!
Jollof Rice
A huge favourite in the PACT community and a classic. Our mums Shakira and Tola adapted it to make it a healthier option for families, they reduced the salt and oil and added mixed vegetables and chickpeas to give it an extra boost!
Mackerel Chutney
Deshni's a curry expert and shared an absolutely delicious mackerel chutney with the Family Food Club so we can try and get more healthy fish into our diets. We ate it with cauliflower rice, something most of us had never tried before but was surprisingly tasty!
Yam Porridge
A super simple, delicious and comforting Nigerian recipe adapted by Chino to make it healthier by adding spinach and reducing oil and salt.
Moi Moi
A really special Nigerian dish adapted to make it simpler and Tola showed us how to fold the banana leaves with her expert hands.
Healthy Roasted Vegetables
Miriam expertly put this delicious recipe for a quick simple meal together with roasted vegetables (most vegetables roast well so it's very adaptable!) and couscous.
Easy Egg Muffin Omelettes
This recipe was so much fun to make with the children and is so adaptable for any spare vegetables you have in your kitchen!
Red Lentil Bolognese
Lentils are super cheap and healthy, a great option for children. Lots of people don't think they like lentils, but maybe they just haven't given them the chance! Chino adapted this great recipe from Jack Monroe's great blog
Banana Muffins
We get lots of surplus bananas from East Street Market so this recipe is a great option. The sweet banana means that we don't need to use much sugar and the recipe from Super Healthy Kids uses a lot less oil for these great muffins children will love.
Chutney
We also took advantage of the great mix of surplus vegetables from East Street Market to make a chutney with tomatoes, peppers, courgette and carrots. We adapted this recipe from BBC Good Food.
Sweet Potato Wedges with Yogurt Dip
A great accompaniment to lots of dishes, super simple and a much healthier alternative to potatoes. We found our recipe on BBC Good Food.
Veggie Pizza
Pizza is surprisingly simple to make at home and is really healthy with some great vegetable toppings, it is also very cheap! Children also love to decorate their own. We got a great recipe from BBC Good Food.
Rainbow wraps with Beetroot Hummus
This is a quick and easy lunch option for children. We grated, chopped, shredded and made ribbons of all different vegetables (cucumber, beetroot leaves, carrot, peppers, mushrooms), added some beetroot hummus, a bit of chicken and wrapped it all up in whole wheat wraps or colourful gluten free options, or even a lettuce leaf!
