Leonie’s Journey as a Maternity Mate
"The Parent Action staff are incredible people," Leonie begins. "They’re always ready to help in any way they can. No task is too difficult for them. I’m not very technical, and the support I’ve received from the team has been amazing—it's something I’m still so grateful for."
In line with our theme of amplifying "Parent Action Voices," today we’re excited to chat with Leonie, one of our dedicated Maternity Mates.
She’ll share her experience supporting mums in our community and what this journey means to her.
Luna: Hi Leonie, How are you?
I’m good and really enjoying my time with Maternity Mates.
Luna: How did you get involved as a Maternity Mate?
I got involved through Kings College Hospital Maternity department that I’m a volunteer the matron thought it would be good for me to do the course with MM.
Luna: As a Maternity Mate you received a training, could you tell me how the training was?
The training was really good, I enjoyed all aspects of it and learned quite a lot from it especially breastfeed and would like to further my knowledge in this area. The tutors were knowledgeable and patient in helping us as students, making sure we understood and were clear about everything.
Being a Maternity Mate comes with its challenges and rewards. Meeting parents, especially mums navigating the complexities of pregnancy and postpartum life, has been a profound experience for Leonie. "Every mother referred to Maternity Mates faces unique challenges. This role requires working through these issues with them as they arise. Thankfully, I have regular supervision and one-on-one meetings with staff members. These sessions provide a safe space to express concerns and reflect on the emotional journey, which is invaluable."
Leonie’s primary role involves supporting mothers both before and after childbirth. "Postpartum can be especially challenging," she explains. "New mothers are often overwhelmed by the demands of caring for their baby while needing to prioritize their own well-being. I introduce them to resources like Baby Banks, where they can access essentials like clothes, milk, nappies, buggies, and car seats. I also guide them to local Food Banks, helping them gradually gain independence."
Through her time with Parent Action, Leonie has grown immensely. "I’ve learned to be patient. My understanding of breastfeeding has deepened. I’ve become a better person, more appreciative of life, and committed to treating others with kindness and empathy."
Looking ahead, Leonie’s future is bright. "Because of my experience as a Maternity Mate, I’ve received a paid job offer that I’m really excited about. With the Maternity Mates program in Southwark coming to an end, this opportunity came at the perfect time. I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my new career as an official Doula."
Leonie’s story reminds us that every act of support, no matter how small, creates ripples of change. Her journey as a Maternity Mate exemplifies the strength, growth, and impact possible through community and compassion.
"Meeting the parents is both rewarding and challenging... You need to be able to work through those issues as they arise." — Leonie
